My son has decided that baseball is his sport. I’m thrilled, my wife is afraid he’ll get hurt. She worries all the time. One of the things I was looking forward to was picking out his Youth Baseball glove. I remember getting my first youth baseball glove with my dad. That had been a long time ago, so I decided to research the youth baseball glove of today. The web has lots of options for the youth baseball glove. This was going to be fun.
After my son started playing, he was assigned first base. I was an infielder, so I thought this was great. Now we needed to look at first base gloves. First base gloves are actually different from other infield baseball gloves. First base gloves are actually similar to catcher mitts. First base gloves are longer of course, but they also don’t have individual fingers. First base gloves come in both left and right, my son is right handed.
So, we were looking for a left handed baseball glove. My natural inclination is to look at a first base glove from Nokona. I always used a Nokona glove when I played ball. The Nokona glove that I had was an out fielders glove, so I wanted to check out other brands too. I know that the official gloves of the Mlb are Rawlings gloves. That doesn’t necessarily make the Rawlings gloves better than the Nokona glove, but it makes them worth a look.
Rawlings makes first base Softball Gloves also, so at least they had versatility. I discovered that first base softball gloves were not any different than first base gloves for baseball. But I was in search of a first base glove for my son, so I had to not get distracted. The Rawlings gloves were overwhelming. On the Rawlings site there were 499 options for Rawlings gloves. Luckily you could narrow the Rawlings gloves down by how you threw and then youth and then infield baseball gloves. This helped a lot. Soon I was able to pick out the two or three Rawlings gloves that I thought were going to work for my son.
But something wasn’t right. I kept going back to the Nokona glove of my childhood. I decided to check out what they had to offer too. They had lots of infield baseball gloves to choose from. But I needed a first base glove. I found the perfect first base glove. Now I had to decide.
In the end, I decide to get the Nokona glove and one of the Rawlings gloves. My son alternates between them. He’s having a blast playing baseball, and my wife is happy that he hasn’t gotten hurt. Now I’m looking forward to my daughter being older so she can play softball. I really look forward to buying her one of her first softball mitts. Both brands had tons of softball mitts. I can’t wait to shop some more for baseball gloves and softball mitts through the rest of their childhoods.
